Coup de Thai

There has been a coup in Thailand and the army has claimed power and the overthrow of the Prime Minister. You can read more about it on the BBC here.

The PM was out of the country, attending the UN General Assembly in New York, along with other heads of state and important dignitaries. The PM was due to give a speech at the General Assembly, and has cancelled it. Reports seems unsure as to whether he will return to Thailand.

It got me thinking about some of the lighter aspects of this situation. If he doesn't return, and he's stuck overseas, would he have enough pairs of clean underwear, given he'd be staying away a lot longer than anticipated?

And what will the other delegates at the General Assembly say to him when they meet him over lunch or in the lift. "Sorry about the coup, old chap", just doesn't seem to do it.

Come to think of it - what DO heads of state say when they are in the lift together at these big events. "How are you?" or perhaps "Nice tie" or "Do you come here often? Is your father a thief that he stole diamonds and put them in your eyes?". I mean - what does one head of state discuss with another head of state for small talk?

These are the thoughts that occurred to me in the shower this morning. Sometimes shower thoughts are profound. Other days they aren't really :)

I've often wondered what they say, too. Now I know! This is what they say: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5188258.stm. The full BBC article is here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/5189048.stm\ :)

About the underwear... the freakyironic thing was that when he left Thailand for NY, the press were making light of the fact that he took 15 pieces of luggage with him...joking about whether he would be coming back..ha ha he he he, awwwww..

So I guess the good news is, he's probably got enough pairs to keep him going for a while.. if not, he can probably dip into that $2 billion (tax free) he's got stored away - presumably in a few of those suitcases - from the sale of his shares in a telecommunications company!
